Additional Opportunities
MA Degree The Master's International (MI) program is offered at Virginia Tech through the School of Public and International Affairs. Earn a Master's in Urban and Regional Planning or a Master's in Public and International Affairs in combination with a two-year Peace Corps experience. The two degree programs are outlined in a two-page pamphlet. The MI program is an unique chance to combine Peace Corps service with graduate school. MI students take classes that help prepare them to better serve communities overseas. MI students have the opportunity to produce substantive work relating to their Peace Corps experience. This program is also an excellent method for re-adjusting to life in the United States. Contact either the Peace Corps faculty coordinator or the Peace Corps campus recruiter to speak with current MI students.
The Peace Corps also offers the Fellows/USA program exclusively for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs). Just like the MI program, the Fellows/USA program is a partnership between the Peace Corps and leading universities and colleges in the United States. See the latest fliers from Peace Corps about the two advanced degree options, Master's International and Fellows/USA. Once you have found a program and school of interest please check out that institutions specific Peace Corps website. Each school has a faculty member responsible for facilitating the education and service dynamic.
Peace Corps Campus Recruiter One of the many benefits of being a RPCV in graduate school is that you are eligible to be a campus recruiter at one of the many universities where recruiters are located. The campus recruiter position is a full-time assistantship (20hrs/wk) which at Virginia Tech translates into full in-state tuition remission, graduate student health insurance and a monthly stipend. The recruiter is responsible for reaching out to community and university students, conducting applicants interviews and basic office work. The recruiter also has the opportunity to work with the local RPCVs. This position is a chance to regale people with all of your fascinating Peace Corps stories. For further information and/or to express interest in the program, please contact the recruiter.
Study Abroad, etc. The Office of International Research, Education, and Development (OIRED) at Virginia Tech is your link to more international opportunities. OIRED conducts research all over the world and has several RPCVs in its ranks.
